Current app scope

Supported formats and honest limits.

LensPin works with static camera photos in Apple Photos and timestamped GPX tracks. Format support depends on what Photos and ImageIO can read, while optional EXIF editing has narrower requirements.

Compatibility at a glance

What LensPin can read and what it can change.

ContentUse in matchingPhotos locationOptional EXIF GPS edit
JPEG / HEIC static photosWhen camera model and capture time are readableSupportedUsually supported through a non-destructive Photos edit
DNG / RAW and other Photos/ImageIO-readable static photosWhen required metadata is availableSupportedMay fall back to library location only; the original or RAW is not rewritten

Format name alone is not a guarantee.

A particular asset can still be unavailable, missing metadata, stored only in iCloud, or unsupported for Photos content editing. LensPin reports the outcome per photo.

Which photos become candidates

LensPin filters before it suggests.

A candidate must be a static camera photo without a location.

LensPin also needs readable camera make, model and capture time. Screenshots, videos, unknown-camera images and photos that already have a location stay outside the matching flow.

GPX input

Timestamped track points, not just a line.

The current parser accepts GPX 1.1 track points with valid latitude, longitude, and time. Original track segments remain separate, and implausible high-speed jumps are split for safety.

System behavior

iOS and iCloud considerations.

iOS 26 and later

LensPin can use the system's continued-processing task for a user-started scan while the app is backgrounded or the device is locked.

iOS 17–25

Background time is limited. LensPin keeps the screen awake during scanning; a long absence may pause the task until the app returns.

iCloud and optional EXIF edits

Photos may need to download an original. EXIF editing can also need temporary storage; failure does not undo a successful Photos-library location.
