LensPin can ask Apple Photos to download an iCloud-only asset when it needs original metadata or an editable current version. Connection speed, file size, storage, and iOS background rules affect how long that takes.

iCloud is part of the Photos request

LensPin does not connect to an independent photo cloud. Apple's Photos framework retrieves the asset under your iCloud configuration.

What may need to download

A thumbnail can be visible in Photos while the original file is stored only in iCloud. LensPin may need the local original to read camera metadata that is not available from the Photos item alone. Optional EXIF GPS editing also needs source image data.

What progress means

The scan tracks completed items and can report how many assets required iCloud retrieval. A slow item does not mean the matching engine is uploading the photo; it usually means Photos is obtaining the original.

Keep enough local space

Large RAW files and optional non-destructive edits can require temporary local storage. If storage is low, finish other downloads, free space, or use the default Photos-library location without EXIF editing.

Background behavior by iOS version

  • iOS 26 and later: LensPin can use the system continued-processing task for a user-started scan, with system progress while the app is backgrounded or the device locks.
  • iOS 17–25: background time is limited. LensPin keeps the screen awake on the scan view; a long absence can pause work until you return.

If a scan appears stuck

  1. Open Photos and confirm the original can download there.
  2. Check Wi-Fi or cellular access allowed for Photos.
  3. Keep LensPin in the foreground on iOS 17–25.
  4. Try a shorter date range to identify a specific slow or unavailable asset.
  5. Preserve the progress count and any displayed error before restarting.
Do not repeatedly restart a large scan.

If Photos is still downloading originals, repeated restarts can discard useful progress. Return to LensPin first and let the current task continue when possible.

Privacy boundary

iCloud transfer is handled by Apple under your Photos settings. LensPin does not send the original to a LensPin server. Read the full privacy explanation.
